West Midlands Seals £600M Boost: Historic Power Shift from Westminster!

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!
A momentous occasion has arrived for the West Midlands region, as a groundbreaking shift in power, funding, and responsibility from Westminster has been confirmed with a single annual payment of £389 million. This unprecedented move marks a significant step towards boosting economic growth, improving living standards, and accelerating the region’s transition to net zero.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced the Integrated Settlement, a historic £600 million funding package that will empower local leaders, led by Mayor Richard Parker, to drive forward regional priorities such as economic growth, job creation, affordable housing, and enhanced transport infrastructure. This transformative settlement represents a departure from the traditional grant-based funding model, streamlining services and infrastructure projects to deliver tangible benefits for the people of the West Midlands.
Mayor Parker expressed his gratitude for the Government’s confidence and commitment in devolving powers and responsibilities to the region. He highlighted the potential for targeted investments in key areas that matter most to the community, such as job opportunities, housing affordability, and sustainable transport solutions. This initial funding injection lays the foundation for future multi-year settlements, enabling bold, long-term decision-making to drive inclusive growth and prosperity across the region.
Notably, the Integrated Settlement will play a crucial role in facilitating access to employment, enhancing public transport networks, promoting affordable and social housing, and supporting business growth. Furthermore, it will expedite the region’s transition to net zero by funding initiatives to retrofit homes with low-carbon heating and insulation, thereby reducing energy consumption and bills for residents.
This landmark announcement coincides with the Government’s commitment to devolution outlined in the English Devolution White Paper, which aims to empower regions and reduce centralised decision-making. The West Midlands’ partnership with the National Wealth Fund underscores a strategic approach to securing additional funding for skills development, employment support, business expansion, and climate change mitigation.
Looking ahead, the West Midlands anticipates further multi-year settlements and increased regional control over critical areas such as skills development, employment support, business growth, and climate action. As the first of only two English regions to receive a single pot of money this year, the West Midlands is paving the way for Greater Manchester and other regions to follow suit from 2026 onwards.
With a clear focus on driving sustainable growth, enhancing quality of life, and accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy, the West Midlands is poised to lead the charge towards a brighter, more resilient future. Together, as champions of Net Zero, we can create lasting opportunities and ensure that no community is left behind in the pursuit of a greener, fairer society.
