Transforming Transport in East Midlands: £200M Boost with UTG Membership

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!
The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) has recently made a significant move by joining the Urban Transport Group (UTG) as a Principal Member. This decision has not only strengthened the network of transport authorities across the UK but has also paved the way for transformative changes in the transport sector.
Established in February 2024, EMCCA brings together key players like Derbyshire County Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Derby City Council, and Nottingham City Council to form a unified public transport body for the East Midlands region. The primary goal of EMCCA is to revolutionize transport opportunities in the area by enhancing local rail, buses, roads, and active travel options. Additionally, the authority aims to promote the use of electric cars and build on its reputation for transport innovation.
Recently, EMCCA secured a massive funding of nearly £200 million from the Department for Transport to invest in creating better connections between cities, towns, and rural areas within the region. This investment will make it easier and more affordable for people to travel seamlessly across the entire East Midlands region.
With EMCCA joining as a Principal Member, UTG now boasts a total of eight Principal Members across the largest city regions in England. This includes London, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North East, and now East Midlands. Nottingham City Council, previously a UTG Member, will now be represented through EMCCA.
As part of its new role, EMCCA will have a representative on the UTG Board, alongside seven other Directors from different Principal Members. Peter Mann, Interim Transport Programme Director, will serve as EMCCA’s representative on the UTG Board.
Peter Mann expressed his enthusiasm for joining UTG, stating, “On behalf of the East Midlands Combined County Authority, I am delighted to be joining the Urban Transport Group. UTG has long led the debate on transport at the highest level, and we hope to play our part in its continued role.”
Jason Prince, Director of the Urban Transport Group, also shared his excitement about EMCCA’s inclusion as a Principal Member. He highlighted the unique geographical makeup of EMCCA, covering vibrant cities like Nottingham and Derby, as well as the picturesque Peak District. Prince emphasized the strength of the network, with each member bringing diverse perspectives, insights, and experiences to improve public transport and active travel options across city regions, towns, and surrounding areas.
This collaboration between EMCCA and UTG signifies a crucial step towards enhancing sustainable transport options, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting eco-friendly modes of travel. It sets a positive precedent for other regions to follow suit and work towards achieving a net-zero future.
