‘Expansion of educational fund to benefit thousands more learners’

Hello, Champions of Net Zero!
In an exciting development to support post-16 learners in Wales, the Welsh Government has announced a significant increase in the household income thresholds for the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA).
This decision will open doors for thousands more students in colleges and sixth forms to access essential financial support, creating a more inclusive and accessible further education system.
Commencing from the new academic year in September, the income thresholds for EMA will witness a substantial rise. Currently, over 16,000 students benefit from the EMA grant, but this number is expected to increase by approximately 3,500 learners.
The household income threshold for families with one dependent child will be raised from £20,817 to £23,400. For families with two or more dependents, the threshold will increase from £23,077 to £25,974. This means that more families with lower household incomes will now qualify for the EMA.
Vikki Howells, Minister for Further and Higher Education in Wales, expressed her thoughts on the matter:
“Wales already provides the most generous Education Maintenance Allowance in the UK, supporting post-16 learners in pursuing academic or vocational courses. This change will now extend that support to thousands more learners.
“We take pride in our track record of maintaining and enhancing the Education Maintenance Allowance. We are resolute in our commitment to a brighter future, and the increase in EMA eligibility is one of the ways we are making it happen. This announcement means that thousands more learners will receive additional financial support to continue or embark on their further education journey.”
The Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly grant of £40 designed to assist 16 to 18-year-olds from eligible households with further education expenses like transportation or meals. EMA was discontinued in England in 2011 and is retained at a lower rate of £30 in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The elevation in income thresholds will make a significant impact on students from low-income families, offering them the financial assistance necessary to continue their education without the added burden of financial stress. This move aligns perfectly with the Welsh Government’s dedication to ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to excel in their educational pursuits.
With the new income thresholds set to come into effect from September, thousands more post-16 learners in Wales will reap the benefits of the Education Maintenance Allowance.
