Prevent Charger Cable Theft with Evolt Device

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

In an era where electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular, the challenge of safeguarding the infrastructure that supports them has never been more pressing. In response to the rising tide of EV charger cable theft and vandalism, Evolt Charging has unveiled a pioneering solution – a new cable alarm designed specifically to protect charging assets and ensure that these essential services remain accessible to drivers.

As the adoption of electric vehicles surges, so too has the alarming trend of cable theft. Reports indicate that criminals are increasingly targeting EV charging points for the valuable copper wiring within the cables, a practice that poses significant challenges for Charge Point Operators (CPOs). Although the resale value of copper may be relatively low, the financial implications for CPOs are substantial. Each stolen cable can cost up to £1,000 to replace, not to mention the inconvenience it causes to EV drivers who rely on these charging facilities.

Recognising the urgency of this issue, Osprey Charging has partnered with Evolt Charging to trial the innovative cable alarm, which is manufactured by Circontrol. This device is among the first of its kind to be deployed in the UK and represents a significant step forward in protecting charging infrastructure. The installation process is remarkably straightforward, allowing the alarm to be fitted to any DC charger within just an hour. Once in place, the device is capable of detecting when a charger cable has been cut or removed, triggering an immediate response in the form of an audible alarm and a flashing beacon.

What sets this cable alarm apart is its versatility. The alarm can be programmed to sound for a pre-determined duration, ranging from 10 minutes to two hours, providing an effective deterrent for potential thieves. Furthermore, the device can seamlessly integrate with existing notification and management systems, as well as site security protocols and lighting, adding an additional layer of protection to charging stations.

Lewis Gardiner, Operations Director at Osprey, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling the pervasive issue of cable theft. He stated, “Tackling the cable theft currently plaguing public charging hubs relies on collaboration between CPOs, hardware manufacturers and host landlords, all of whom are impacted if solutions are not found. Evolt’s new Cable Alarm is a welcome, proactive approach. Osprey have always been quick to trial new technology, and we look forward to seeing the impact of this innovation on the ground.”

Anne Buckingham, Managing Director at Evolt Charging, echoed Gardiner’s sentiments, highlighting the critical nature of addressing cable theft. “The increase in EV cable theft is a real concern. It is inconvenient and frustrating for EV drivers and costly for the charge point owners, so we need to be one step ahead of the criminals. This is high on the agenda for CPOs who will require a combination of different tools and tactics depending on the different types of locations they need to protect. Their response to the new Cable Alarm is already encouraging,” she remarked.

Both leaders have underscored their commitment to working with ChargeUK and relevant authorities to devise strategies that deter these incidents. The collaboration aims to create a unified front against the rising tide of cable theft, ensuring that EV drivers can charge their vehicles without fear of vandalism or theft.

In summary, the introduction of Evolt Charging’s cable alarm marks a significant advancement in the fight against EV charger cable theft. As the electric vehicle market continues to expand, the need for robust security measures will only grow. This innovative solution not only protects valuable charging infrastructure but also enhances the overall experience for EV users, allowing them to charge their vehicles with confidence. By fostering collaboration between CPOs, technology providers, and authorities, we can pave the way for a more secure and reliable charging network, essential for the future of electric mobility.

As we move towards a sustainable future, the importance of safeguarding the infrastructure that supports electric vehicles cannot be overstated. The introduction of such innovations is vital in ensuring that the transition to electric mobility is both smooth and secure. Let us all remain vigilant and support initiatives aimed at protecting our green energy resources.
