Volkswagen Group Boosts Fleet Savings with Ovo Charging Deal

Welcome, Net Zero News readers,

In an exciting development for electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts and fleet operators alike, Volkswagen Group has expanded its partnership with Ovo Energy, now offering a remarkable charging rate of just 7p per kWh at home, available around the clock. This initiative promises to make EV ownership even more accessible and cost-effective for a broader range of customers, including company car and van drivers, as well as those participating in salary sacrifice schemes.

Since its inception in July 2024, this discounted charging rate has been a boon for retail drivers. Now, as part of a comprehensive EV package, it is being extended to fleet customers who purchase vehicles from Volkswagen Group brands, which include Audi, Cupra, Škoda, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, starting from January 1, 2025.

This initiative not only aims to ease the financial burden of charging but also aligns with the growing commitment to electrification across the automotive landscape. With Ovo’s innovative ‘Charge Anytime’ feature, powered by Kaluza’s smart technology, drivers can benefit from automatic charging when carbon emissions and energy prices are at their lowest. Since its launch in 2022, this add-on has helped customers save over £10 million, underscoring the effectiveness of smart charging solutions in reducing costs and promoting sustainable energy consumption.

In addition to the attractive charging rate, new customers will receive an enticing offer of 2,000 free miles upon signing up, along with annual bonuses of 1,000 free miles for the subsequent three years. This initiative not only incentivises the switch to electric but also rewards loyal customers for their commitment to sustainability.

The extension of the Ovo partnership to encompass fleet customers is a significant recognition of the increasing number of businesses transitioning to electric vehicles. Iker Lazzari, head of group fleet and insight operations for Volkswagen Group UK, expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m really pleased we’re now able to offer fleet drivers the same convenient ‘EV package’ as retail buyers. Free miles, anniversary bonuses, and access to one single energy cost are new and simple ways in which we can show our commitment to electrification and, importantly, to making the switch to EV both easy and enjoyable.”

Moreover, even those currently driving diesel and petrol vehicles can benefit from this initiative. Through Ovo Beyond, touted as the UK’s first ‘Energy Savings Account’, drivers are rewarded for planning to transition to electric. They can ‘bank’ an impressive 50 extra miles, in addition to the standard 100 EV miles available each month, for a period of up to 24 months, provided they ultimately purchase a new Volkswagen Group electric vehicle. This forward-thinking approach not only encourages the shift to electrification but also serves as an excellent incentive for those contemplating this significant change.

Alex Thwaites, Ovo’s director of EVs, stated, “Together with Volkswagen Group, we are rewarding customers for making the switch to an EV. We look forward to extending our market-leading Charge Anytime to fleet drivers and helping more people on their decarbonisation journey, all while cutting costs.” This sentiment echoes the broader industry trend towards creating a more sustainable and economically viable future for all drivers, particularly as the UK strives towards its net-zero targets.

As we stand at a pivotal crossroads in the fight against climate change, partnerships like the one between Volkswagen Group and Ovo are essential. They not only create tangible benefits for consumers but also contribute significantly to the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions across the transportation sector. The future of mobility is undoubtedly electric, and initiatives like these will play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable landscape for generations to come.

In conclusion, the expansion of the Volkswagen Group and Ovo partnership is a noteworthy step towards making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. With competitive charging rates, enticing incentives, and a commitment to smart energy solutions, both companies are leading the charge towards a greener future. As we continue to navigate the complexities of climate change and strive for net-zero emissions, collaborative efforts like this will be vital in helping us all move forward on the path to sustainability.

Stay tuned for more updates and developments in the electrification journey as we work together to achieve a net-zero future.
