South Tyneside Partners with Connected Kerb for EV Charging

South Tyneside Council Takes Bold Steps Towards a Sustainable Future with EV Charging Expansion

In a groundbreaking initiative to enhance electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, South Tyneside Council is partnering with Connected Kerb to install up to 2,000 new charging points over the next two decades. This ambitious project aims to transform the borough’s landscape, making it easier for residents to switch to electric vehicles and contribute to a greener future.

Investing in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

The collaboration with Connected Kerb is set to redefine how South Tyneside residents access EV charging. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Initial Rollout: Within the first two years, new charging points will be installed at 20 strategic locations, including key residential and commercial areas.
  • Rapid Charging Upgrade: Upgrades will be made to 14 existing rapid charging sites, adding 15 sockets with 50kW power.
  • Future Expansion: By the summer of 2025, an additional 100 charging sockets will be introduced at 33 locations, significantly increasing the borough’s EV infrastructure.

A Shift from Legacy Systems

Previously, South Tyneside had only 59 electric vehicle charging points. This new initiative will not only replace older, less efficient charging stations but also introduce modern on-street chargers that are crucial for meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles.

The council’s commitment to sustainability stems from a climate emergency declaration made in July 2019, which highlights their dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting greener alternatives.

Financial Benefits and Sustainability Goals

One of the key changes in this initiative is the introduction of an electricity tariff for charging. This move aims to alleviate the council’s annual subsidy of £200,000, which has become unsustainable given the 70% increase in usage between 2021 and 2022. Expected savings of £20,000 annually in maintenance costs will further enhance the project’s viability.

Voices of Support

Rugby legend and Connected Kerb Brand Ambassador, Martin Offiah MBE, recently expressed his enthusiasm for the project during a visit to South Tyneside. He stated:

“Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is crucial for a smooth transition from traditional vehicles to electric ones. It’s fantastic to see such significant progress in South Tyneside. By expanding the charging network, we can ensure that people have the confidence to switch to electric vehicles, knowing they can charge wherever they go.”

Councillor Tracey Dixon, Leader of South Tyneside Council, echoed this sentiment:

“This new operational model is helping to expand and enhance our existing infrastructure to provide a more reliable, modern comprehensive system. We hope that residents will have the confidence to make the switch to electric.”

Councillor Margaret Meling, Lead Member for Economic Growth and Transport, added:

"Providing better, reliable and accessible charging infrastructure is a huge step forward in supporting our sustainability ambitions and the wider work we are doing to help cut carbon emissions.”
