Urgent Action Required for Green Shipping Corridors

Urgent Action Required to Propel Green Shipping Corridors Forward

The race towards sustainable shipping is gaining momentum, but without decisive governmental action, the progress of green shipping corridors could face a significant slowdown. A recent report released by the Getting to Zero Coalition and the Global Maritime Forum highlights the urgent need for policy changes to overcome what experts are calling a "feasibility wall." With an impressive 40% growth in green shipping initiatives this year, the time for action is now.

What Are Green Shipping Corridors?

Green shipping corridors are designated maritime routes that facilitate the use of sustainable fuels and technologies. Launched in November 2021, these corridors are essential for achieving ambitious climate goals, such as the target of having zero-emission fuels comprise 5% of all maritime fuel by 2030. As the global shipping industry seeks innovative ways to decarbonise, these corridors serve as vital pathways for change.

Key Findings from the Annual Progress Report

According to the Annual Progress Report on Green Shipping Corridors 2024, there are now 62 active initiatives worldwide, with a third advancing to critical phases involving feasibility studies and implementation roadmaps. Notably, six frontrunner initiatives are gearing up for real-world implementation, showcasing the potential of green corridors.

Despite this progress, the report warns that without government intervention, the growth of these initiatives could stall due to rising operational costs associated with transitioning to sustainable energy sources.

Major Bottlenecks Facing Green Shipping Initiatives

The report identifies several key challenges that need to be addressed:

  • Cost of Transition: The lack of national policies to bridge fuel costs is the primary obstacle hindering development.
  • Need for Support: Governments must provide the necessary support to unlock the business case for alternative energy, including hydrogen-based fuels.
  • Collaborative Approaches: Innovative commercial agreements for fuel procurement and cargo chartering within green corridor initiatives are essential.

Five Recommendations to Accelerate Progress

To ensure the continued success of green shipping corridors, the report outlines five pivotal recommendations:

  1. Government Support: Implement policies to ease the operational cost gap for transitioning to alternative energy sources.
  2. Innovative Agreements: Develop new commercial agreements for fuel procurement and cargo within green corridor initiatives.
  3. Flexible Governance: Establish a programme that encourages collaboration while allowing for risk-sharing and scaling of initiatives.
  4. Focus on the Global South: Explore policies and financing options for green corridors and zero-emission fuels in developing countries.
  5. Focused Support for Existing Initiatives: Prioritise resources for current green corridor initiatives to meet the Clydebank Declaration targets.

A Call to Action from Industry Leaders

Jesse Fahnestock, the Director of Decarbonisation at the Global Maritime Forum, emphasises the importance of collaborative efforts: “Green shipping corridors have an essential role to play in accelerating zero-emission shipping. However, continued progress is not guaranteed. By sharing the costs and risks associated with new fuels, we can create breakthroughs in zero-emission shipping before 2030.”

The Path Forward

As we move towards a greener future for shipping, it is crucial for national governments and industry leaders to work together. Urgent action is required to overcome the feasibility barriers that threaten to stall progress.
