‘Tesla and Fastned Lead in Zapmap Survey Results’
Tesla and Fastned Shine in Latest UK EV Charging Survey
In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Tesla and Fastned have emerged as frontrunners, topping the annual satisfaction survey conducted by Zapmap, a leading UK charge point mapping service. This survey, which gathered insights from 3,700 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) drivers, underscores the growing importance of reliable and accessible charging networks as the UK accelerates toward its net-zero goals.
A Closer Look at the Rankings
Zapmap categorised charging networks based on their size: large networks, boasting over 300 charge points, and medium networks, with between 100 and 300 points. Here’s how the leading networks fared:
Large Networks:
1st Place: Tesla
- Total chargers: Over 860 across 80 hubs
- Key strengths: Exceptional value for money and lower pricing compared to competitors.
2nd Place: MFG EV Power
- Total chargers: Over 780 across 195 locations
- Notable features: Reliability and convenient payment options.
3rd Place: Osprey Charging
- Rapid rollout: More than 1,200 chargers across 380 locations in 2024
- Highlights: High satisfaction for accessibility and ease of use.
- 4th Place: Be.EV
- Total chargers: 579 across 179 locations
- Customer feedback: Strong ratings for support and value.
Medium Networks:
1st Place: Fastned
- Total chargers: Over 150 across 26 locations
- Customer satisfaction: High marks for reliability and payment options.
- 2nd Place: Ionity
- Strength: Noted for reliability and user-friendly features.
Emerging Networks
- Sainsbury’s Smart Charge emerged as the most promising up-and-coming network, with 150kW hubs installed at 62 stores, further incentivised by Nectar rewards for users.
What Drives EV Driver Satisfaction?
Zapmap’s survey asked participants to rate their satisfaction in five critical areas: reliability, ease of use, customer support, value for money, and payment options. The 2024 results revealed a strong focus on:
- Reliability: Consistent performance remains paramount for EV drivers.
- Value for Money: With charging costs on the rise, drivers are increasingly aware of pricing structures.
- User Experience: Networks that prioritise ease of access and payment convenience stand out.
Insights from Industry Leaders
Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder and COO at Zapmap, highlighted the significant increase in charging provision across the UK, particularly for ultra-rapid chargers (150kW+). This growth is crucial for fostering a robust EV ecosystem.
Industry representatives echoed similar sentiments:
Martin Symes, EV Director at MFG, stated, “This achievement reflects our commitment to providing accessible and reliable EV charging solutions for drivers.”
- Asif Ghafoor, CEO at Be.EV, noted, “This recognition is especially rewarding because it’s voted for by the very drivers that plug into our network.”
The Future of EV Charging in the UK
As the UK moves towards its net-zero targets, the expansion and reliability of EV charging networks will be critical. Plans to quadruple Ionity’s stations by 2025 and Sainsbury’s ongoing efforts to enhance public charging infrastructure are just a few examples of the industry’s commitment to supporting electric mobility.
