Surge in Used Electric Vehicle Sales Across the UK
Record Surge in Used Battery Electric Vehicle Sales: A Green Shift for the Future
In an exciting development for eco-conscious drivers, the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveal that a record 53,423 used battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were purchased in the last quarter. This marks an impressive 57% increase compared to the same period last year, and now BEVs represent 2.7% of the overall used car market, up from 1.8% in 2022. This growth is not just a statistic; it signifies a notable shift towards greener transportation options, aligning perfectly with the goals of the Net Zero Club.
A Growing Trend in Eco-Friendly Vehicles
The rise in used BEV sales is part of a broader trend that includes:
- Plug-in hybrids: Sales increased by 29%.
- Hybrids: Sales rose by 35.8%.
These numbers reflect a growing consumer appetite for vehicles that contribute to reducing carbon footprints and achieving net-zero emissions.
The Overall Used Car Market
The used car market overall has seen a 4.3% growth between July and September, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of year-on-year growth. Key highlights include:
- Petrol vehicles sold: 1,123,387, up by 5.7%.
- Diesel vehicles: 679,797, down by 3.9%.
Interestingly, superminis remain a favourite among buyers, accounting for 32.4% of all transactions, followed closely by lower medium cars at 27.1% and dual-purpose vehicles at 15.8%.
Confidence in the Market
As Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, stated, “Growth in the used car sector is good news and driven by an outstanding range of desirable and, increasingly, zero-emission vehicles to suit every budget.”
However, he emphasised the importance of a robust new car market for EVs. The transition to electric vehicles requires consumer confidence, which can be bolstered through incentives and support. Without this, potential buyers may hesitate, leading to a stagnation in the market.
The Future of Electric Vehicles
Looking ahead, the figures suggest a promising trajectory for the used electric vehicle market. With nearly six million units sold from January to September 2023 alone, there is a clear demand for sustainable options.
For those considering a switch to electric or hybrid vehicles, the current landscape offers a wealth of choices that cater to various budgets and preferences.
