Contact local MPs before electric van debate in Parliament.

The challenges faced by fleets in transitioning to zero-emission vans will take center stage in Parliament next week. Operators are being urged to reach out to their MPs and request their attendance at the upcoming debate.

On Tuesday, 29th October, Members of Parliament will engage in a debate focused on the transition to zero-emission vans. The Transport Minister will be present and obligated to deliver a formal response.

The initiative for this debate was taken by MP Sarah Edwards, following concerns raised by industry representatives from the BVRLA at the Labour Party Conference last month. The spotlight was on the slow pace of adoption of zero-emission vans, as per vehicle registration data from the SMMT.

The Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, implemented in January, requires Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure that 10% of new van registrations by 2024 are for models with zero emissions. However, recent registration figures reveal that only 5.2% of zero-emission LCVs up to 4.25 tonnes were registered in September, and 5.3% for the first nine months of the year.

The Zero Emission Van Plan, a coalition comprising BVRLA, Logistics UK, REA, AFP, and EV Café, launched a campaign in February. They are advocating for critical changes to enhance the affordability of electric vans, improve vehicle charging infrastructure, and streamline regulations.

A spokesperson for the Zero Emission Van Plan highlighted the gap between supply and demand, stressing that electric LCVs are often costly and not equipped to meet operational requirements, especially concerning charging infrastructure.

“The transition to zero-emission vans requires increased fiscal support, better charging facilities, and the elimination of regulatory hurdles. While some fleets have successfully made the switch, many remain unable to do so due to financial and operational constraints,” the spokesperson remarked.

Fleet operators and industry stakeholders are being urged to contact their local MPs and express their support for the sector by attending the upcoming debate. They can easily do so by using the tool provided on the BVRLA website: BVRLA – Zero Emission Van Plan.
