Improving digital access and sustainability

The City of Edinburgh Council has officially launched a new digital strategy aimed at propelling the Scottish capital towards a more sustainable and inclusive future. The Digital and Smart City Strategy 2024-2027 has been given the green light by members of the Policy and Sustainability Committee, marking a pivotal step towards accelerating digital transformation in Edinburgh.

This latest strategy, the second iteration following its initial launch in 2020, has already shown significant progress in enhancing the city’s infrastructure and services through the utilization of digital tools. From enhancing access to the council website to implementing bin and damp sensors in both streets and homes, the initiative has made tangible improvements across various aspects of city life.

Moreover, the strategy has also mandated cyber training for all council employees to bolster resilience and promote digital safety in an era where large organizations face escalating cybersecurity threats. The introduction of integrated public transport information and continuous monitoring of high-traffic areas further demonstrates Edinburgh’s commitment to connectivity and safety.

Cammy Day, Leader of the City of Edinburgh Council, expressed enthusiasm for the strides made so far, stating, “Our Smart City approach is integral to our goals of creating vibrant living and working environments, combating poverty and inequality, and achieving net zero status. Our use of smart technology has already streamlined council services and enhanced connectivity, but our vision is to ensure that every resident has access to affordable digital services and the necessary skills.”

Day continued, “We intend to expand our smart technology usage to enhance everyday council services and leverage data monitoring to gain deeper insights into how individuals navigate and utilize the city. As a burgeoning hub for technology, Edinburgh aims to collaborate with universities, businesses, and startups to foster growth and attract global investments.”

By embracing innovation, the City of Edinburgh Council believes that it can enhance the quality of life for all residents and workers within the city. The future looks promising as Edinburgh continues to harness the power of digital technology to build a more sustainable, inclusive, and connected community for everyone.
