Cunninghame donates to Lockerbie Ice Rink

Cunninghame Housing Association has generously donated £1,000 to support the Lockerbie Ice Rink Curling School, a longstanding sports facility in the heart of Lockerbie. Since its establishment in 1967, Lockerbie Ice Rink has been a vital hub for the local community, offering curling and skating activities to people from South West Scotland and North West England.

In addition to providing sports opportunities, the ice rink also serves as a venue for various community events and gatherings. Its versatile space allows for meetings, functions, and even large-scale events during the summer months. The facility is bustling with junior curling and skating sessions, catering to young enthusiasts and aspiring athletes.

The £1,000 donation from Cunninghame Housing Association specifically aims to support the Mini Rockers, a group of young learners aged between six to nine years old. The funding will subsidise a block of curling sessions for these budding athletes, laying the foundation for their future success in the sport.

This significant contribution was made possible through Cunninghame’s ‘Making Our Communities a Better Place Fund’, an initiative designed to support local projects and initiatives throughout the year. The fund allocates resources to deserving causes until the annual budget is exhausted.

Rae Graham, the chairperson of Lockerbie Ice Rink, expressed gratitude towards Cunninghame Housing Association for their support towards the Mini Rockers program. The donation not only aids in the development of young athletes but also contributes to the maintenance of the facility, ensuring its longevity and continued service to the community.

Janet Strang, the chairperson of Cunninghame Housing Association, emphasised the importance of supporting initiatives like Lockerbie Ice Rink. By providing young people with opportunities to engage in sports, develop social skills, and explore new interests, the ice rink becomes a valuable asset in fostering personal growth and community engagement. Strang hopes that the young participants enjoy the sessions and benefit from the enriching experiences offered by the ice rink.
