National Trust homes transferred to Perth & Kinross Council.

Perth & Kinross Council leader Councillor Grant Laing recently met with Stuart Maxwell, the National Trust for Scotland’s regional director for Edinburgh & East, in Dunkeld to commemorate the transfer of 20 National Trust for Scotland homes to the local authority. They were accompanied by the council’s Housing and Social Wellbeing convener Councillor Tom McEwan, along with other local elected members.
Since the 1950s, the National Trust for Scotland has overseen the management of residential homes, an office, and two commercial units in Dunkeld. These 17th and 18th century buildings were initially at risk of demolition before the charity stepped in to save them, restoring the structures and renting them out to tenants. This initiative aimed to preserve the unique historic charm of Dunkeld’s town centre, renowned as one of Scotland’s most picturesque areas.
Discussions have taken place between the charity and Perth & Kinross Council regarding the transfer of these properties to the council’s Housing Revenue Account. Approximately 25 tenants will be impacted by this change, transitioning to become council tenants with various associated benefits. Both the charity and council are committed to ensuring a seamless process for residents during this transition period.
Stuart Maxwell expressed, “The National Trust for Scotland takes pride in its contribution to safeguarding Dunkeld for many decades. This new arrangement will not only maintain the conservation of these important properties and historic township but also provide advantages for residents.”
Councillor Laing highlighted, “We have engaged with affected tenants to discuss the benefits of this transfer, receiving positive feedback. As a social landlord, we can offer reduced rent levels and access to a wide array of council services, including 24-hour emergency repairs and a home improvement programme for these tenants.”
Councillor McEwan emphasised, “Tenants will enjoy secure tenancies with ongoing investment to enhance their homes to the highest standards possible. It’s gratifying that we can extend our services to these new tenants while securing the future of historically significant buildings in Dunkeld.”
Local elected member Bailie Claire McLaren echoed the sentiment, stating, “These homes will have a lasting impact on the people of Dunkeld for generations to come. Priority consideration will be given to individuals with ties to Dunkeld for any vacant tenancies in these properties.”
