Mott MacDonald secures EV charging contract with Welsh Gov.

Mott MacDonald Secures Contract to Support Welsh Government’s Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Expansion

The Welsh Government is taking strides towards a greener future by appointing Mott MacDonald to their new Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) four-year framework. This initiative aims to ensure that all electric vehicle users have convenient access to charge points across the country.

With the growing adoption of electric vehicles and the unique geographical landscape of Wales, the Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy for Wales estimates the need for as many as 55,000 fast chargers and 4,000 rapid chargers by 2030. In response to this demand, Mott MacDonald will leverage its expertise in transport consultancy, engineering, commercial, and planning services to assist the Welsh Government in planning and executing the rollout of this crucial infrastructure.

As part of Lot 3 of the EVCI Advisory Services framework, Mott MacDonald will be responsible for developing an ECVI strategy and business case. This will precede the procurement and implementation of the new charging infrastructure. Utilizing a diverse range of specialist services and tools, including civil, highways, and utilities engineering, Mott MacDonald will incorporate its Electric Charging Optimum Solution Tool (ECOS). ECOS utilizes visualisation and machine learning to pinpoint the optimal locations for EV charging sites, thereby maximizing efficiency and accessibility.

Graeme Smith, Divisional General Manager for Transport and Mobility Solutions at Mott MacDonald, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Transportation is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve decarbonisation goals and enhance air quality, the transition to electric vehicles needs to be accelerated. We are honoured that the Welsh Government has entrusted us with the responsibility of facilitating this transition through the strategic planning and deployment of new ECVI.”

Aside from the EVCI framework, Mott MacDonald is actively supporting Wales in its journey towards a sustainable and integrated transport system. This commitment includes undertaking design work for Cardiff Crossrail, providing analysis and optioneering for bus corridors in southwest Wales, and developing the business case for the A494 River Dee replacement bridge.

As Mott MacDonald partners with the Welsh Government on this ambitious venture, we can anticipate a tangible shift towards a cleaner, more environmentally conscious mode of transportation across Wales.
