Aberdeen Play Team Wins Top Charity Award

The Play Team at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital has received the prestigious Starlight’s Play Team of the Year award during National Play in Healthcare Week. This recognition from the charity for children’s play in hospitals and hospices showcases the team’s exceptional dedication and innovative use of play to improve the hospital experience for young patients.

Despite facing numerous challenges, the team has consistently demonstrated the importance of play in helping children and families navigate the often overwhelming hospital environment. Through their efforts, they have shown how play can reduce fear, pain, and trauma, advocating for its role in a child’s treatment and recovery from illness.

Heather Beattie, the play service manager, expressed how the team was overjoyed by the recognition. She shared, “This award comes at a crucial time for us and signifies a culmination of our hard work. It serves as a bright light, allowing us to pause, reflect, and remember why we are committed to what we do.”

Sarah Simpson, the secretary to Allied Health Professionals at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, praised the team led by Heather Beattie for their dedication and professionalism. She highlighted their relentless efforts to make the hospital experience as pleasant and enjoyable as possible for patients, understanding the fear and stress that can accompany hospital stays.

Cathy Gilman, the chief executive of Starlight, commended the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital team for embodying the essence of play in healthcare settings. Despite limited resources, the team’s creativity in creating a safe and supportive environment for children undergoing treatment is truly inspiring. Their commitment to bringing joy to young patients amidst their medical journey is what led them to be honoured as the Play Team of the Year 2024.
