Wales begins industry decarbonisation for net zero future

Monday 7 October 2024
The British Government has exciting news for the North West and North Wales industrial heartlands as they have officially approved the groundbreaking HyNet project. This initiative aims to revolutionize the region by implementing cutting-edge technologies such as carbon capture and storage, along with low-carbon hydrogen infrastructure on a large scale. The ultimate goal? To help industries in these areas drastically reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by a whopping 10 million tonnes annually, which is equivalent to taking four million cars off the road.
But that’s not all – HyNet isn’t just about environmental benefits. This project is also set to create a massive 6,000 new construction jobs, as well as long-term operational roles. David Parkin, the Chair of the HyNet Alliance, expressed his enthusiasm for this project, highlighting the importance of decarbonising industries without compromising their growth and competitiveness in the global market.
Parkin stated, ‘We need to decarbonise our industries to continue producing the everyday items we rely on, without sacrificing the planet. By investing in the industries of the future, we can ensure sustainability while supporting economic growth.’
The government’s support for HyNet is a significant milestone towards achieving the Clean Power 2030 Mission in the North West and North Wales. This will pave the way for the generation of resilient low-carbon power, leading to the creation of new jobs, protection of existing positions, and attracting investments to stimulate growth in the region.
HyNet aims to secure a massive £5 billion of private sector capital, driving the re-industrialisation of the region. This will position companies to compete effectively in the global low carbon markets and attract new industries to the UK.
