Leaders forging new partnerships, resetting relationships in UK.
This week, leaders from all corners of the UK are gathering in Scotland to focus on investment and growth, setting the stage for a new era of partnership and collaboration.
The Prime Minister will be convening the inaugural Council of Nations and Regions, bringing together First Ministers and regional mayors to support the development of new partnerships and reset relationships. This presents a unique opportunity for leaders to secure long-term investment, boosting growth and living standards across the UK.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his determination to usher in a new era of stability, trust, and partnership with businesses, investors, Devolved Governments, and local leaders. His vision is to enhance the economy and restore the UK’s reputation as one of the best places in the world to do business.
Starmer stated, “I’ve set out that we will be doing things differently, and that’s why we are delivering on our promise to convene the first Council of Nations and Regions. This collaborative effort will maximise opportunities and make genuine, meaningful changes to our business landscape, elevating our position on the world stage and unlocking the UK’s untapped potential for the benefit of all.”
The council will see the participation of several key figures, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, and regional leaders such as Scottish First Minister John Swinney, Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan, and Northern Irish First Ministers Michelle O’Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly.
Local mayors like Sadiq Khan of London, Andy Burnham of Greater Manchester, and Tracy Brabin of West Yorkshire will also be in attendance. Each representative brings a unique perspective and commitment to driving growth and prosperity in their respective regions.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin shared her optimism about the new era of partnership between the Government and Mayors, highlighting the potential for regional growth and development. She emphasised the role of mayors as advocates for their regions, attracting investments, creating jobs, and improving living standards.
Brabin added, “Through partnership working and by listening to business, we’ll deliver the long-term investment our country needs to shake off stagnation and face the future with confidence.”
The council meeting precedes the International Investment Summit by three days, ensuring that leaders align their efforts to maximise the opportunities presented by the summit and forge new relationships with external investors. This strategic approach aims to leverage the collective strength of the UK regions and attract impactful investments.
Following the inaugural meeting, the council plans to convene every three months, facilitating ongoing collaboration and progress towards shared goals. This regular engagement is essential in sustaining momentum and driving sustainable growth across the UK.
As leaders converge in Scotland for this significant gathering, the focus remains on fostering a spirit of cooperation, innovation, and progress. By working together and harnessing the diverse strengths of the UK regions, leaders aim to propel the nation towards a brighter, more prosperous future for all.
