Dundee achieves record level of affordable housing since 2006

The city of Dundee has reached a significant milestone with the highest number of new affordable homes completed since 2006, surpassing the number of private homes completed in the same period. According to the latest figures from the annual Dundee Housing Land Audit for 2024, a total of 483 homes were completed, with 282 units (58%) designated for social rent and 201 (42%) for private housing.

Interestingly, 83% of the completions in the past year were on brownfield land, underlining the city’s commitment to sustainable and responsible urban development. The remaining 17% of the completed homes were on greenfield sites, showcasing a balance between urban expansion and environmental conservation.

In response to these positive developments, Steven Rome, convener of Dundee City Council’s fair work, economic growth and infrastructure committee, expressed his satisfaction, stating: “It has been another positive year for house building completions. The Housing Land Audit offers valuable insights into the city’s economic progress, and I encourage all interested parties to participate in the consultation process.”

Lynne Short, depute convener of Dundee City Council’s neighbourhood regeneration, housing and estate management committee, highlighted the importance of new housing in enhancing Dundee’s appeal as a place to live and work. She emphasised the need for collaboration across private, public, and social housing sectors to ensure the city’s continued growth and prosperity.

The annual Dundee Housing Land Audit serves as a crucial source of information for the council in monitoring the implementation of the Dundee Local Development Plan. By providing an accurate account of land supply within the city’s boundaries, the audit enables informed decision-making and strategic planning for future development projects.

As the consultation period unfolds, stakeholders are invited to share their feedback and suggestions, which will be carefully reviewed to incorporate any necessary amendments. The finalised Dundee Housing Land Audit for 2024 will be published following this comprehensive feedback process, reaffirming Dundee’s commitment to transparent and inclusive urban development.
