Bield Housing Saves Tenants £1.8m
Bield Housing and Care, based in Scotland, has made a significant impact by helping its tenants save over £1.8 million. The organisation’s Income Advice team, established in late 2022, has worked tirelessly to provide support to vulnerable tenants in navigating the complexities of benefits systems and pension claims.
Led by experienced advisors Rebecca Summers and Scott Alexander, the team offers expert guidance on various financial matters, including pension awareness and claims, Housing Benefit applications, Universal Credit support, and grant applications. Their hard work has resulted in savings of £1,847,740 for tenants over the past 18 months.
Rebecca Summers shared a success story where they assisted a gentleman on Universal Credit, securing a £12,500 back payment for him after extensive work with the DWP. This payment covered essential costs like service charges and communal heating expenses, showcasing the tangible difference the team is making in tenants’ lives.
Despite challenges posed by the shift towards online services by local councils, Bield Housing and Care has processed 1,034 referrals since March 2023, showing their commitment to helping older individuals access the support they need. Rebecca Summers acknowledges the difficulties faced by elderly people in dealing with online processes for the first time and emphasizes the importance of providing support and guidance to ensure they receive their maximum entitlement.
By raising pension awareness and offering comprehensive financial advice, Bield Housing and Care continues its mission to enhance the lives of older people in Scotland, one tenant at a time. Tracey Howatt, the director of customer experience at Bield, commended the income advice officers for their outstanding achievement in saving tenants over £1.8 million, stating that it reflects the organisation’s commitment to helping older people live independent and fulfilled lives.
The income advice officers not only offer guidance on charity and grant applications but also facilitate access to food banks and identify additional benefits tenants may be eligible for. These additional benefits, ranging from £5 to £182 per week, empower tenants to address their specific needs and improve their quality of life.
