New team launches to boost local green efforts and support UK targets

SP Energy Networks has recently announced the establishment of a dedicated team focused on supporting community energy initiatives within its network areas. This team, along with a comprehensive community energy strategy, recognises the crucial role that community-led green projects play in assisting the UK and local communities in reducing energy costs and embracing environmental benefits. The initiatives championed by this team will foster energy autonomy, address local energy challenges, and contribute towards tackling environmental issues, fuel poverty, and enhancing communities’ ability to engage with such projects.

An independent review commissioned by SP Energy Networks highlighted the potential of community-led green initiatives to deliver a staggering 2.5 million tonnes of carbon savings annually by 2030 – an amount equivalent to powering 2.2 million UK households. These community-led projects are pivotal in helping the country move closer to achieving its net-zero goals by providing alternative energy sources and grid flexibility to cater to the increasing demand for low-carbon technologies.

As part of the Community Energy Strategy, SP Energy Networks will be hosting a series of workshops to educate community groups on the intricacies of the community energy sector. These workshops will offer practical sessions with technical guidance and support to help groups navigate the journey of implementing their energy projects successfully. The Community Energy team members will be available to meet with groups, provide advice, and assist in decision-making processes.

This initiative also aligns with the UK Government’s Local Power Plan, aimed at funding community-led clean energy projects through grants and low-interest loans. This initiative forms part of the broader strategy to achieve 8GW of solar and onshore wind power in the coming five years, further underscoring the government’s commitment to combating climate change.

Nicola Connelly, the CEO of SP Energy Networks, elaborated on the initiative, stating: “Our new community energy team is a result of close collaboration with community energy organisations and stakeholders to better understand the challenges faced by various projects. By breaking down potential barriers and providing support, we aim to help more local groups realise the significant benefits community energy projects can offer.”

Emma Bridge, Chief Executive at Community Energy England, also welcomed SP Energy Networks’ proactive stance in supporting community energy groups. She highlighted the critical role that technical expertise, funding guidance, and strategic support from the new team will play in empowering local organisations to overcome obstacles and achieve their renewable energy objectives, ultimately contributing to a sustainable and resilient energy system.

As the network operator for regions including Central and Southern Scotland, Merseyside, Cheshire, North and Mid Wales, and North Shropshire, SP Energy Networks is at the forefront of connecting community energy projects – ranging from local renewable generation initiatives to low-carbon transport – to the grid.
