Tech boost to fuel growth

The North East of England received a major economic boost with the announcement of a £10 billion investment deal that will not only create thousands of jobs but also establish the largest AI data centre in Europe. This project is a significant step towards enhancing the UK’s AI capabilities and driving economic growth in the region.

The establishment of the data centre in Blyth will lead to the creation of over 4,000 jobs, with 1,200 dedicated to the construction of the site. This massive project is set to commence next year and will play a crucial role in hosting vast amounts of data required to power AI technologies and store information. The partnership with a leading US investment company highlights the importance of foreign investment in the government’s agenda for economic prosperity.

Furthermore, aside from job creation, the company involved in the deal will inject £110 million into a fund aimed at providing additional skills training and improving transport infrastructure in Blyth. This move not only benefits the local community but also demonstrates a commitment to supporting the growth and development of the region.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasised the significance of this investment deal in boosting the UK economy and showcasing the country as a prime destination for foreign investors. He stated, “The number one mission of my government is to grow our economy so that hard-working British people reap the benefits – and more foreign investment is a crucial part of that plan. New investment such as the one we’ve announced with Blackstone today is a huge vote of confidence in the UK and it proves that Britain is back as a major player on the global stage and we’re open for business.”

With the UK already hosting the highest number of data centres in Western Europe, the government recognises the importance of these facilities as ‘Critical National Infrastructure’. The establishment of the new AI data centre not only reinforces this status but also positions the UK as a leader in technology and innovation on a global scale.
