Women unite to tackle climate change
Thursday 26 September 2024
Women from various sectors such as business, politics, and NGOs on a global scale are coming together in a united effort to drive climate action forward.
A powerful global network comprising women climate leaders from different fields including business, politics, and the not-for-profit sector is pooling their influence and resources to advocate for increased climate activism and tangible action.
This network boasts prominent figures such as Christiana Figueres, Laurence Tubiana, Mia Mottley, and Marina Silva who played pivotal roles in securing the ambitious Paris Agreement nearly a decade ago.
The primary focus of Women Leading on Climate is to escalate the level of ambition and action by countries in the development of clear and viable national climate plans by the onset of 2025. This includes ambitious targets such as tripling renewable energy, doubling energy efficiency, and phasing out fossil fuels.
Catherine McKenna, the Chief Executive Officer of Climate and Nature Solutions, Chair of the UNSG Panel on Net-Zero, and founder of Women Leading on Climate, expressed, “Women are championing more ambitious climate action in various arenas such as negotiation rooms, boardrooms, communities, and even on the streets. During this critical juncture for climate action, it is imperative for us to unite and amplify our voices. When women join forces, we can achieve more progress at a faster pace.”
She further added, “The network receives backing from leaders who have previously served as climate and environment ministers, played key roles in crafting the Paris Agreement, held positions as UNFCCC President, as well as women driving climate initiatives within the realms of business and finance. Notable supporters include organisations such as the We Mean Business Coalition, CSOs from HSBC, BNP Paribas, Bloomberg, Netflix, Walmart, TIME, Ingka Group, Volvo, Chanel, and influencers from institutions like the IEA, WWF, The Club of Rome, the University of Cambridge, the WRI, and The Nature Conservancy.”
