Seven MMR homes for key workers in Aviemore ready for handover.

Aviemore is set to welcome seven new mid-market rent (MMR) homes specifically designed for local key workers. These three-bedroom family homes, located at the Tulloch Homes Bynack More development, will be available for rent from October 2024. MMR homes are priced lower than private rentals but slightly higher than affordable housing options.

Thanks to funding support exceeding £500,000 from the Scottish Government, the Highland Council, and the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal, these homes will be allocated to key workers such as emergency services staff, healthcare professionals, care workers, and teachers. By providing these essential workers with access to high-quality and reasonably priced homes, the community aims to retain a skilled workforce.

The CEO of HHA, Gail Matheson, highlighted the importance of offering modern and fairly priced rental accommodation in rural communities like Aviemore. She emphasized the need to prevent skilled workers from leaving the region by providing access to essential services such as schools and healthcare. With the support of various stakeholders, HHA will manage the allocation of these homes, with applications now open.

These spacious family homes boast open-plan living and kitchen spaces along with private garden areas. Situated in the heart of Aviemore, residents will benefit from easy access to local amenities including a retail park, train station, and nearby schools.

Paul McLennan, the Housing Minister, commended the initiative, stating that good quality housing is crucial for attracting and retaining residents in rural communities. He highlighted the positive impact these homes will have on the Aviemore community, supporting local businesses and offering affordable housing options to families.

McLennan affirmed the government’s commitment to boosting affordable housing supply, with substantial investments being made to deliver permanent homes in suitable locations. By collaborating with partners like Highland Council and HHA, targeted funds such as the Rural Affordable Homes for Key Workers Fund play a pivotal role in addressing the specific housing needs of rural areas.

In addition to the seven homes, HHA has also secured a deal with Tulloch Homes to acquire 41 apartments at the Bynack More development in early 2025. This response to the increasing demand for flats in the region will further enrich HHA’s portfolio of mid-market rental properties.
