Exciting news for London’s electric vehicle drivers as Places for London – Transport for London’s (TfL) property company – has partnered up with Fastned to bring ultra-rapid charging hubs to the city. This collaboration aims to support the Mayor of London’s ambitious goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.
The first phase of this joint venture will see the creation of five initial hubs, set to be operational by 2026. These hubs will cater to high-mileage drivers including taxis, private hire vehicles, delivery drivers, sole traders, and local businesses looking to make the switch to electric vehicles. Locations for these hubs include Hanger Lane in Ealing, Canning Town in Newham, Hillingdon Circus and Hatton Cross in Hillingdon, and Tottenham Hale in Haringey. Each hub will be open to the public and play a vital role in expanding London’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The partnership between Places for London and Fastned is a significant step towards enhancing the accessibility and safety of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the city. The hubs will meet or exceed the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023 and follow best practices outlined by the BSI’s guidance on accessible charging infrastructure. Safety features such as clear sightlines, high-quality lighting, CCTV surveillance, and on-site assistance will be prioritised to ensure a secure charging experience for all users.
Fastned, a well-established provider of ultra-rapid charging hubs, already operates one of London’s busiest sites in Greenwich. With 25 charging hubs in the UK and over 325 across Europe, Fastned brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this partnership. Their reliable network, data-driven operations, and 24/7 multilingual customer support ensure a seamless charging experience for drivers.
Mark Farrow, director of strategy and planning at Places for London, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming charging hubs, highlighting their importance in facilitating rapid charging for electric vehicles. These hubs are a crucial part of the city’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation.
London currently boasts more than 1,200 rapid or ultra-rapid charging points, with around 300 provided by TfL. However, projections indicate a need for approximately 4,000 rapid charge points by 2030 to meet growing demand. TfL is actively seeking opportunities to expand EV charging infrastructure, including utilizing its own land for charging bays and collaborating with other stakeholders across the Greater London Authority (GLA).
Tom Hurst, UK country director for Fastned, emphasised the importance of a robust EV charging network in London to accommodate daily trips and longer journeys. Fastned’s commitment to expanding ultra-rapid charging facilities at key locations throughout the city aligns with the goals of accelerating London’s transition to electric vehicles.
