Electric vans chosen for longer distances by fleets

Electric vans are taking on a bigger role in fleets’ daily operations, especially for longer journeys, a recent study has shown. The 2024 Arval Mobility Observatory Barometer uncovered that a more significant percentage of small, medium, and large van operators are opting for electric vans for distances exceeding 100 miles on a daily basis.

According to the research, 38% of small van operators plan to use electric vans for daily distances above 100 miles, as opposed to 25% for shorter trips. The figures for medium vans stand at 37% for over 100 miles and 24% for below, while for large vans, it’s 35% and 28%, respectively.

The study also delved into the operational strategies that businesses are implementing to facilitate the shift towards electrification in their van fleets. Top measures highlighted by respondents include preferring electric vans with lower payload capacity (30%), ensuring drivers won’t need to recharge on-the-go (28%), selecting routes with charging availability (25%), and avoiding towing requirements (20%).

John Peters, the Head of Arval Mobility Observatory in the UK, shared his insights on the findings, stating: “These new questions for the Arval Mobility Observatory in 2024 shed light on intriguing trends regarding how van fleets are adapting to electrification. The practical approach to adoption showcased by operators is commendable as they navigate the current limitations of electric vans by deploying them in roles where they excel, such as carrying lighter loads and bypassing towing tasks.”

“The survey results indicate a growing number of small, medium, and large electric vans being utilized or planned for daily routes exceeding 100 miles. This demonstrates that while operators are mindful of the practical constraints of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), they are not confining them solely to local trips. Electric vans are now being utilised for covering 25,000 miles or more annually.”

Peters added, “As fleets gain more experience with electric vans, it will be fascinating to observe further developments. They will become more familiar with the operational advantages of electric vans and hone their usage strategies. Moreover, we anticipate the introduction of new designs at a rapid pace, each generation progressively overcoming existing limitations.”
