1 in 5 damp cases reopened, Housemark research finds

Housemark research has unveiled a troubling statistic – one in every five cases of damp and mould in rental properties are being reopened due to recurring issues. This alarming revelation sheds light on the persistent challenges that landlords face in addressing this critical issue.

This exclusive data is part of a collection of key performance indicators (KPIs) on damp and mould developed by Housemark, aimed at supporting the sector. Landlords now have access to insights for the 2023/24 year, which are proving instrumental in improving monitoring and tackling recurring problems with damp and mould.

The Housemark KPIs have formed the foundation for the Scottish Housing Regulator’s (SHR) proposed new measures for the Annual Return on the Charter (ARC). Currently undergoing consultation, these measures are expected to be implemented from April 2025.

Jonathan Cox, Housemark’s chief data officer, commented on the challenges faced by landlords in collecting consistent data on damp and mould. He highlighted the significant variations across the sector, with factors such as the type of housing stock playing a crucial role in the results.

Excitingly, Housemark has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) for a series of joint webinars starting on 17th October at 12pm. The first session will focus on the 2023/24 ARC data, offering an in-depth look at the new damp and mould measures and providing attendees with an exclusive preview of Housemark’s data on damp and mould.

These joint webinars, scheduled throughout 2024/25, are free for CIH and Housemark members. Covering a range of topics, the next webinar on 16th January will delve into the AFS data, providing valuable insights for landlords and stakeholders in the housing sector.
