Council’s EV Fleet Now Includes Electric Cargo Bikes

Veolia and Hammersmith & Fulham Council have rolled out an exciting expansion to their eco-friendly fleet, introducing eight new electric cargo bikes to enhance their collection and street cleansing services. This sustainable initiative aims to make environmental strides by reducing harmful emissions and promoting a cleaner, quieter community for borough residents.

With a total of 20 electric vehicles now in operation, the council’s fleet includes a mix of cargo bikes, electric vans, street cleansing cage vehicles, and an electric Refuse Collection Vehicle (eRCV) designated for the upcoming garden waste collection service. These vehicles are designed to significantly decrease nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM) emissions, aligning with Veolia’s commitment to support Hammersmith & Fulham Council in achieving their goal of becoming the greenest borough in the country.

The introduction of cargo bikes is set to revolutionise service efficiency, thanks to their ability to navigate through narrow routes like the Thames Pathway. This feature will enable the team to efficiently empty public litter bins and respond to incidents of fly-tipped waste across the borough.

This eco-conscious move complements Veolia’s ongoing efforts to assist Hammersmith & Fulham in their journey towards environmental sustainability. Since the commencement of the contract in 2022, Veolia has introduced food waste services to over 50,000 households and supplied wheeled bins for recycling and waste to 16,000 kerbside properties in the area.

Expressing her support for the initiative, Councillor Sharon Holder, Hammersmith & Fulham Cabinet Member for Public Realm, affirmed, “Our waste team plays a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of H&F’s parks and streets. With the introduction of these new vehicles, we are taking a proactive step towards reducing air pollution in our community while delivering essential services.”

Scott Edgell, General Manager for Veolia South London, shared his enthusiasm for the launch of these electric vehicles, stating, “We are delighted to introduce these electric vehicles in Hammersmith & Fulham. The expansion of our fleet will significantly cut emissions and contribute towards the council’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. Our commitment to sustainable and innovative practices is unwavering, and we are proud to lead the way in eco-friendly operations.”

With Veolia and Hammersmith & Fulham Council at the forefront of sustainable practices, these electric vehicles symbolise a vital step towards a greener future for the borough. By prioritising environmental consciousness and embracing innovative solutions, they are paving the way for a cleaner, healthier community.
