New Kirkcaldy hub offers tips for independent living

Fife Council’s Independent Living Advice Hub (ILAH) officially opened its doors on Friday, 20th September, on Kirkcaldy’s bustling High Street. This hub is a beacon of hope for individuals seeking advice and support on how to maintain an independent lifestyle. The overarching goal is to create a seamless experience where various services collaborate harmoniously to empower individuals to live independently.

The concept of this hub was birthed from the Scottish Government’s Adapting for Change initiative, highlighting the necessity of integrating services to enhance accessibility for those in need. Situated within a new affordable housing development, the hub received funding through the Housing Services’ Affordable Housing Programme, showcasing a commitment to providing essential resources for the community.

At the inauguration of the ILAH, Councillor Judy Hamilton, the Spokesperson for Housing and Building Services, emphasised the significance of this initiative. She articulated, “The Independent Living Advice Hub epitomizes our ability to converge housing, health, and social care services to offer comprehensive support under one roof. This hub is pivotal in enhancing people’s quality of life by enabling them to live independently for an extended period. Witnessing the fruition of this project fills me with immense pride.”

The hub is a trove of services aimed at facilitating independent living, featuring a bathroom and stairlift room pod. These meticulously crafted spaces serve as safe environments for Occupational Therapists to conduct assessments for equipment and adaptations in a setting mirroring the individual’s home environment.

Additionally, an innovative tech library was established within the hub, allowing individuals to test various technologies designed to foster independent living. Sponsored by The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, this tech library is a testament to the progressive steps being taken to support the community. A dedicated TEC zone equipped with cutting-edge sensors and technology is also in the pipeline, poised to be a hub for public demonstrations and staff training. Furthermore, organisations have the opportunity to reserve desk and meeting room spaces within the hub to synergise and innovate collaboratively.

Fiona McKay, the interim director of Fife Health and Social Care Partnership, shared her insights on the hub’s mission. She expressed, “Nurturing individuals to maintain wellness, health, and independence within their residence is a focal point for the Fife Health and Social Care Partnership. This necessitates a unified front of all services working in tandem to provide optimal support. The inception of the Independent Living Advice Hub signifies a pivotal moment where services and organisations converge to fortify community support.”

The Independent Living Advice Hub is a testament to the power of collaboration, as it brings together Fife Council’s Housing Services, Fife Health & Social Care Partnership, and myriad other organisations on a common platform. Together, they strive to streamline access to crucial services and support, bolstering the community’s ability to sustain an independent lifestyle.
