Manx Utilities Upgrades Isle of Man EV Charging Network

Manx Utilities, in collaboration with Evolt Charging, is embarking on a significant project to enhance public charging facilities on the Isle of Man, aiming to provide a more efficient and seamless experience for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

The investment, exceeding £100,000, is set to revolutionise the EV infrastructure on the island by implementing state-of-the-art, quicker charging stations at strategic locations, managed by the proficient team at Evolt Charging.

Following the exit of the previous supplier Pod Point from the public charging market, this initiative by Manx Utilities is a commendable step towards upgrading the existing infrastructure to cater to the increasing demand for EV charging facilities.

The transition is expected to conclude by the end of the year, resulting in a smarter, faster, and more reliable charging network. The conversion of most single-phase 7kW charge points to three-phase 22kW units with load balancing capabilities will facilitate swifter vehicle charging and accommodate the rising number of EVs hitting the roads.

Chairman of Manx Utilities, John Wannenburgh, articulated that this upgrade would establish a robust and dependable charging network to meet the future requirements of EV drivers. He expressed, “We are confident that our enhanced infrastructure will not only serve the current EV drivers but also contribute towards a more sustainable future for all.”

The project commences at key locations such as Manx Utilities’ Ballacottier HQ, the Comis Hotel, and Loch Promenade. While the implementation is underway, some charging points may be temporarily offline. Updates regarding any outages and their locations will be communicated on the Manx Utilities website and the Pod Point app. Moreover, a round-the-clock freephone service will be available from November to assist drivers.

Existing rapid chargers at the Sea Terminal and Tesco stores in Peel, Port Erin, and Ramsey will not be replaced but seamlessly integrated into the new platform.

The new Evolt infrastructure promises user-friendly features like RFID card access for convenient, contactless charging, compatible across the UK and Europe. EV drivers will have multiple payment options, including pay-as-you-go via WebPay, contactless payment at DC rapid chargers, as well as app-based charging through the Swarco eConnect App and Pod Point App during the transition to the Evolt eConnect App.

Additionally, card readers may be installed at sites housing multiple charge points, such as Shaw’s Brow multi-storey car park in Douglas, enhancing accessibility and ease of use.

Manx Utilities plans to repurpose Pod Point charging posts in good condition for their fleet charging needs, while the rest will be returned to Pod Point for recycling, aligning with sustainable practices.

Anne Buckingham, the managing director of Evolt Charging, expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, emphasising that the incorporation of cutting-edge technology and robust service support will deliver an enhanced charging experience, reflecting a commitment to the long-term success of EV drivers on the island.
