Glasgow honours Wheatley’s care heroes
A group of dedicated staff members at Wheatley Care services in Scotland have been honoured for their outstanding commitment to the care sector, with more than two decades of service under their belts. These 67 individuals recently gathered in Glasgow for a special event celebrating the profound impact their support has had on the lives of others.
Among the celebrated staff is Kevin Brodie, the homelessness services manager at Dunedin Harbour Hostel in Leith, Edinburgh. For the past 20 years, Kevin has been providing vital support to homeless individuals with complex needs, including those with challenging behaviours. The hostel offers high-quality accommodation and person-centred support, along with access to various services like community health, addiction groups, employability training, art therapy, IT classes, and sports groups.
Reflecting on his role, Kevin shared, “The most fulfilling aspect of my work is witnessing individuals enhance their lives. The progress, regardless of its scale, holds immense significance for each person. The strength of our team lies in its diversity, with each member bringing unique skills and approaches to the table.”
Barbara Dunbar, a care services development co-ordinator at Wheatley Care for 21 years, also recounted her journey, saying, “I started as an assistant at a homeless service in 2003 and have since supported individuals with addiction issues here in Glasgow. Witnessing individuals transform through our support is truly rewarding. I recall working with a young man battling addiction, guiding him towards rehabilitation—a monumental milestone in his recovery journey. Today, he not only stands rehabilitated but also aids others facing similar challenges.”
Wheatley Care extends a spectrum of support services, including Livingwell, catering to individuals aged over 55 to enable independent living. The organisation also provides assistance to those grappling with homelessness, disabilities, and addiction issues.
Louise Dunlop, the managing director of Wheatley Care, expressed her admiration for the staff, stating, “It was a privilege to acknowledge these individuals and extend heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering dedication. Their years of service have positively impacted numerous lives across Scotland, a testament to their enduring commitment to assisting vulnerable members of society.”
Adding to the sentiment, she highlighted the rewarding nature of the care sector, emphasising the substantial influence it wields in transforming lives. Wheatley remains eager to welcome compassionate individuals to join their team, inviting all interested parties to explore this fulfilling career opportunity.
