The National Trust for Scotland, a revered conservation charity dedicated to preserving and showcasing Scotland’s rich heritage, has been overseeing the management of residential homes, an office, and two commercial units in Dunkeld since the 1950s. These 17th and 18th-century buildings were salvaged from the threat of demolition by the charity, restored to their former glory, and rented out to tenants. This initiative has not only protected the town’s historic character but has also contributed to Dunkeld being lauded as one of Scotland’s most charming destinations.

Now, both the charity and Perth and Kinross Council have confirmed ongoing discussions regarding the potential handover of these properties to the council’s Housing Revenue Account.

**Transition and Benefits for Residents**

Approximately 25 tenants will experience this transition, where they will transition from tenants of the charity to tenants of the council, bringing with it a host of associated advantages. Both parties are intent on ensuring a seamless shift for the residents.

Stuart Maxwell, the regional director for Edinburgh & East, expressed, “We have been reassessing our management strategy for these properties and are proposing a closer collaboration with Perth and Kinross Council. We believe this alignment is essential for the sustained conservation of the buildings and their role as local accommodation, a key concern in this area.”

“Following consultations with our Board of Trustees, Perth and Kinross Council, and the Scottish Government, we have tentatively agreed to transfer the ownership of these properties and most of our other buildings in Dunkeld to the local authority. This move aims to safeguard the individual properties, preserve the historic township, and bring about improvements for residents,” he added.

**Council’s Commitment**

Housing and Social Wellbeing convener, Councillor Tom McEwan, affirmed, “Perth and Kinross Council’s Housing Service has a stellar reputation in Scotland, and this transfer will offer numerous perks to the tenants residing in these properties.”

“We anticipate the provision of significantly reduced rents, secure tenancies, access to our top-notch Repairs Service, and ongoing investments to elevate the standard of their homes to the utmost level. Tenants in Dunkeld will benefit from our proficient Housing staff, aiding them in their tenancy and providing access to a plethora of quality services,” Councillor McEwan elaborated.

Council leader, Councillor Grant Laing, pledged support for the sitting tenants throughout the transition, ensuring their queries are addressed, and they receive the necessary assistance. Measures will be implemented to prioritize individuals with local ties to Dunkeld for future vacancies, addressing the community’s housing concerns and enhancing the local area.

**Positive Outlook for Dunkeld Community**

Bailie Claire McLaren, the local elected member for the Strathtay ward, commended the transfer, asserting that it secures valuable affordable social housing in Dunkeld for the foreseeable future. Highlighting the Housing Service’s objective to provide high-quality affordable homes across Perth and Kinross, she emphasized the positive impact of this move.

Stuart Maxwell beautifully encapsulated the Trust’s dedication to Dunkeld, stating, “The National Trust for Scotland takes immense pride in safeguarding Dunkeld’s essence for decades. Even if this proposal materializes, we will retain ownership of land at Stanley Hill south of the River Tay, ensuring our continued involvement in upholding Dunkeld’s nature, beauty, and heritage.”

**Ongoing Discussions and Support**

Negotiations will persist between the National Trust for Scotland and Perth and Kinross Council, with a joint meeting scheduled locally on Wednesday, 25th September, including all tenants. Housing personnel from the council alongside Trust representatives will attend to address any queries and extend their support.
