New toolkit boosts council’s clean energy efforts
The UK Power Networks and UK100 have joined forces to create a groundbreaking toolkit aimed at empowering local authorities in their pursuit of clean energy goals. Titled ‘Navigating the Net Zero Energy Transition: A toolkit for local authorities,’ this resource is specifically tailored for elected leaders, cabinet members, and officers who are at the forefront of driving positive change in their communities.
Across the UK, local authorities are experiencing a shift towards renewable energy sources, an increase in demand for electric vehicle charging points, and a growing focus on green energy infrastructure. As these changes unfold, councils can now come together to share knowledge and insights with peers who are on the same path towards sustainability.
This innovative toolkit serves as a roadmap for local authorities, offering a structured framework to implement new and sustainable solutions. By fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing, it enables councils to make clean energy projects more achievable and impactful within their communities.
Lynne McDonald, head of Local Net Zero at UK Power Networks’ DSO, emphasised the practical value of this toolkit, stating: “It provides local authorities with vital information on how to collaborate effectively with UK Power Networks and make informed decisions. Through use case studies and real-life examples, councils can learn from one another’s experiences and navigate the complexities of transitioning to a Net Zero energy system. The toolkit also sheds light on the changing landscape of the electricity sector, key stakeholders, available support, and financing options for sustainable projects.”
Christopher Hammond, chief executive of UK100, highlighted the pivotal role that local authorities play in driving the transition to a Net Zero energy system. He stated: “Collaborating with UK Power Networks’ DSO, we are empowering councils to shape their response to this transition by developing comprehensive Local Area Energy Plans. By providing councils with the necessary tools and guidance, we aim to support them in facilitating the local deployment of initiatives such as EV charging infrastructure and Community Energy projects. Our goal is to assist councils in unlocking their clean energy ambitions through this valuable toolkit.”
