New station funding approved by Combined Authority!

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has officially given the green light for the investment in the new Liverpool Baltic Station, marking a significant step forward in the mayor’s ambitious plans to enhance the city’s transport infrastructure.

With a substantial investment package of £96 million now approved, the stage is set for the submission of the planning application within the next month. If approved by the Department for Transport, construction is scheduled to commence next year, with the station expected to be operational by 2027, as pledged by Mayor Steve Rotheram.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Mayor Rotheram stated, “I’ve always stressed the importance of having a world-class transport network to unleash the full potential of our region, and that’s precisely what we are striving to achieve. The new Liverpool Baltic Station is just one of the many critical steps towards expanding and improving our Merseyrail system to make it more accessible for all.

“The overwhelming support for this project demonstrates the transformative impact it will have on our communities. It goes beyond mere transportation; it’s about connecting people to opportunities, education, and each other while reducing car usage to achieve our net-zero goals.

“Investing nearly £100 million in this station is a testament to our commitment to revolutionize one of the most vibrant areas in the country. But our vision doesn’t end here – we have plans for three additional stations in Daresbury, Woodchurch, and Carr Mill. Accessible public transport should be a fundamental right enjoyed by everyone, not just those in London.”

In addition to financing the construction of the new station, the investment will also facilitate improvements in the surrounding area, including enhancements for active travel and public space developments. The project will incorporate features such as step-free access, upgraded passenger facilities, and secure cycle parking to encourage greater use of public transport over private cars.

The funding for this initiative will be sourced from the combined authority’s £170 million City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement. In the same meeting where the investment for the new station was approved, various other active travel schemes also received funding endorsement.
