Japan leads the way in sustainable aviation fuel development.

Friday 20 September 2024

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Neste, ITOCHU, and GS Caltex have joined forces to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that aligns with the stringent CO2 reduction targets set by the CORSIA scheme. This partnership marks a significant step towards a greener future in the aviation industry.

CORSIA, spearheaded by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aims to curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from global aviation. While currently operating on a voluntary basis, the scheme is set to become mandatory from 2027 onwards, ushering in a new era of environmental responsibility for airlines worldwide.

At the heart of this collaboration lies Neste’s provision of 1,000 tons of pure CORSIA-eligible SAF to GS Caltex’s refinery in Yeosu, South Korea. This sustainable aviation fuel will be seamlessly blended with conventional jet fuel, paving the way for its distribution at Narita International Airport in Japan.

Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation Business at Neste, emphasised the pivotal role of SAF in slashing greenhouse gas emissions from air transportation. He underlined the importance of CORSIA-eligible SAF in enabling airlines to actively reduce their carbon footprint, thereby fostering a more sustainable aviation sector.

Kueper expressed his optimism about the future of the partnership, highlighting the collaborative efforts with ITOCHU, GS Caltex, and local authorities to establish robust supply chains for SAF. This initiative aims to bolster the availability of sustainable aviation fuel not only in the Asia-Pacific region but also across the globe, propelling the aviation industry towards a low-carbon future.
