Homelessness sector workers receive Blue Light Card discounts

Homelessness workers in frontline roles have been acknowledged for the crucial work they do, with the exciting news that they will now have access to a leading discount scheme. The Blue Light Card, known as the nation’s top discount provider for emergency services, NHS, social care sector, and armed forces, has extended its eligibility to include the homelessness workforce, estimated to be around 60,000 individuals in the UK.

This fantastic development is the result of a new partnership between Blue Light Card and Homewards, a five-year programme created by Prince William and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales. This initiative aims not only to showcase that ending homelessness is achievable but also to change perceptions surrounding this pressing issue.

Collaborating with key membership bodies across the UK – Homeless Network Scotland, Cymorth Cymru (Wales), Homeless Connect (Northern Ireland), and Homeless Link (England) – they are dedicated to supporting the homelessness workforce in making a positive impact in their local communities.

Frontline colleagues working in the homelessness sector are often the first point of contact for individuals facing severe crises. However, the demands of their roles have significantly increased due to the housing emergency and the high cost of living.

A recent survey by St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity revealed that over half (52%) of frontline workers in the sector sometimes struggle to cover their bills or housing costs (44%). Furthermore, nearly half (47%) have personally funded work-related expenses, and more than half (51%) always or often feel at risk of burnout, with an additional 29% feeling this way at times.

By gaining access to the Blue Light Card, workers will have practical opportunities to save money and enhance their overall well-being. This includes discounts on essential items such as groceries and utilities, as well as enjoying coffees and meals out with friends and family after a challenging day at work.

In Scotland, members of Homeless Network Scotland will benefit from a straightforward sign-up process for the scheme. Simply join the pre-approved list of organizations during the sign-up process to access the discounts.
