Dumfries and Galloway tackles population decline
Dumfries and Galloway Council is embarking on an innovative new project to combat the region’s dwindling population and capitalise on the strengths of its vibrant communities. Supported by a generous £90,000 grant from the Scottish Government’s Addressing Depopulation Fund, this year-long initiative aims to devise a comprehensive strategy to tackle this pressing issue.
The population of Dumfries and Galloway has seen a decline from 148,000 in 2018 to just under 146,000 as per the 2023 Census, making this project timely and crucial. At the core of this endeavour is the active engagement of local communities to ensure that the strategy developed meets the diverse needs and aspirations of residents across coastal, rural, and urban areas.
The project will concentrate on key areas such as enhancing housing availability, especially in the private rental sector, and addressing the impact of second homes. Additionally, the council aims to establish community-led plans that will stimulate economic opportunities and position Dumfries and Galloway as an attractive hub for businesses, remote workers, and individuals seeking a superior quality of life.
Upon conclusion, the project will deliver a detailed report outlining a definitive roadmap for combatting depopulation and enhancing residents’ well-being. The knowledge gained from this initiative could potentially serve as a blueprint for other regions in Scotland grappling with similar challenges.
Dumfries and Galloway Council leader, Cllr Gail Macgregor, is optimistic about the immense potential impact of this initiative: “This project is not solely about reversing population trends; it’s about laying the foundation for a brighter future for all of Dumfries and Galloway. By comprehending what propels our communities forward and taking proactive measures to address obstacles, we can shape a region that is naturally appealing for living, working, visiting, and investing in.”
Equalities minister, Kaukab Stewart, remarked, “Through funding these projects, we aim to encourage more individuals to stay, reside, and work within Dumfries and Galloway, whilst ensuring that housing and job opportunities remain plentiful. This support will empower local communities to draw and retain the essential workforce needed to flourish.”
As one of the six local authorities in Scotland benefitting from the £360,000 Addressing Depopulation Fund, Dumfries and Galloway’s progress in this endeavour is of utmost importance. This initiative will specifically focus on the following aspects:
- Enhancing Housing Opportunities: Investigating challenges within the private rental sector, examining the impact of second homes, and identifying future housing prospects.
- Strengthening Communities: Collaborating closely with communities to grasp their experiences, hurdles, and aspirations, ensuring that any plans developed are rooted in the genuine needs and desires of Dumfries and Galloway residents.
- Researching and Implementing Proven Strategies: Drawing on successful practices from other regions, the council will craft a robust plan to counteract depopulation. This plan will include strategies to retain young people, attract new residents, and foster economic prospects, making Dumfries and Galloway an even more thriving and prosperous locale.
- Promoting Inward Migration: Positioning the region as an attractive destination for new businesses, remote workers, and individuals seeking an exceptional quality of life.
