New St Andrews development installs underground bin system

Exciting News for Residents of St Andrews West!
The residents of the new homes at St Andrews West are in for a revolutionary upgrade – they are the first in Scotland to have an underground bin system installed! This innovative system, already common in Europe, eliminates the need for unsightly wheelie bins while still maintaining a four waste stream system.
This cutting-edge underground storage model is currently on a two-year trial period, with plans for Fife Council to take over its management in 2026. Developer Headon Developments is leading the way in sustainable waste management with this bold new initiative.
Joe Headon, representing Headon Developments, highlighted the many benefits of the underground bin system. He stated, “It’s a challenge accommodating four wheelie bins per house – they often block pavements, get knocked over in the wind, and attract unwanted seagulls. This system provides large capacity communal bins that eliminate these issues. Not only does it improve the aesthetics of the area, but it also has significant environmental benefits. Longer periods between collections mean reduced fuel usage for waste collection vehicles, resulting in a win-win situation for all.”
John Rodigan, head of service for Environmental and Building Services, expressed Fife Council’s support for this forward-thinking waste management solution. He said, “Fife Council fully endorses the subterranean domestic waste storage model at St Andrews West. We are eager to assess the environmental advantages it will bring and are considering extending this system to other key developments across Fife in the near future.”
The future certainly looks bright for St Andrews West residents, as they lead the way in sustainable living practices. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking initiative!
