Worldwide Effort to Speed up Energy Change

Friday 13 September 2024

Exciting news on the front of combating climate change! Trade union UNISON has recently joined a groundbreaking initiative that is set to revolutionize the energy landscape on a global scale. UNISON is now a vital part of the movement pushing for a new international treaty with the explicit goal of accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels.

Known as the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, this ambitious endeavour is focused on fostering international collaboration to put an end to the development of new fossil fuel projects. Additionally, it aims to phase out the existing production within the confines of the agreed climate limit of 1.5°C.

With a robust membership of 1.3 million workers in public services across the UK, UNISON’s involvement in this initiative carries significant weight. The primary objective behind UNISON’s decision to join forces with this initiative is to urge the UK Government to champion the cause for this critical treaty.

In a statement, UNISON’s general secretary, Christina McAnea, highlighted the urgent need for action to address the adverse impacts of climate change. Stressing on the detrimental effects of fossil fuel pollution on both public health in the UK and globally, McAnea emphasised the necessity for a speedy and equitable transition away from oil and gas.

McAnea added, “There must be a rapid and just shift towards clean, renewable energy sources, with substantial governmental funding to position the UK as a frontrunner in sustainable energy. This transition will not only help to restore the UK’s international reputation as a climate change leader but also pave the way for a healthier, greener future.”
