Inverkip housing project progresses with approved road improvements

Exciting News Alert! Inverkip is ready to undergo a transformation with plans for the development of 650 new homes and commercial space at the former Inverkip power station site. The £4.15 million road improvement plan has been given the green light by councillors to make way for this groundbreaking project.
The Inverclyde Council’s environment and regeneration committee has approved fresh proposals to create access to the former power station site and address road safety issues in the area. This project, part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, has secured funding of £3.58 million from the UK and Scottish governments, with the local authority contributing the remaining £570,000.
The infrastructure project aims to unlock economic investment in the village through the development of the vacant power station site. The approved proposals include the formation of signalised junctions and a T-junction to enable new access to the site.
Councillor Michael McCormick, convener of environment and regeneration, expressed his delight at reaching this important milestone. He highlighted the significance of the project in delivering positive change for the village and the wider city region. With two successful City Deal projects already completed, the Inverkip development is another step towards major investment and the delivery of new homes.
The project, originally conceived in 2014 and now under the council’s responsibility, has seen evolution in its proposed elements. The focus is on the Brueacre Junction and the switch from a roundabout to a T-junction, aligning with the future capacities of the village. The road infrastructure project sets the stage for the redevelopment of the power station site, bringing with it economic benefits and the potential for job creation.
The anticipated impact of the project includes 400 construction jobs, 120 jobs in follow-on development, and significant gross value-added impacts for Inverclyde and the City Region. In addition, the project aims to deliver 650 residential properties, addressing housing needs and supporting population growth in the region.
Inverkip emerges as a regional regeneration priority with a focus on addressing vacant and derelict land, opening up redevelopment opportunities, and securing economic and environmental benefits for the area. The new plans are set to be presented to the City Deal Cabinet for approval, paving the way for construction work to commence in late 2024/25 and be completed by autumn 25/26.
This development marks an exciting chapter for Inverkip, with the promise of growth, investment, and enhancement of the local community. Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project!
