West Dunbartonshire residents receive £8.2m in benefits and debts wiped

West Dunbartonshire Council’s Working4U Money team has made a significant impact, helping nearly 4,000 local residents secure over £8.2 million through benefit claims and debt write-offs. This support service aims to provide free, expert, and confidential money advice to residents, ultimately maximising their incomes by assisting with benefit assessments, claims, appealing decisions, and debt management.
Throughout 2023/24, the team has also offered advice and information to 253 residents on debt issues, supporting them in managing £1.2 million worth of new debts. Working alongside other services, the team has dedicated officers to assist specific groups such as those affected by cancer or long-term health conditions, older people, families with children, job seekers, and carers.
Positive feedback from customers highlights the valuable work of the team, with one client praising the excellent service and knowledgeable, caring, and helpful staff members. Another expressed gratitude for the Welfare Rights Officer’s support in navigating a stressful situation involving Alzheimer’s disease. A third client emphasized the invaluable nature of the service for individuals facing health challenges and unfamiliarity with the welfare system.
Peter Barry, the Chief Officer of Housing and Employability, acknowledged the impact of the cost of living crisis on residents and emphasized the importance of available help. With an impressive 88% success rate for benefit claims submitted, Working4U Money’s effectiveness is evident. Barry encouraged individuals who believe they may be missing out on benefits or struggling with debt to reach out to the team for invaluable support.
