Exciting developments are on the horizon for Yorkshire Water as they announce their plans to swap out 1.3 million old water meters with state-of-the-art smart meters in South Yorkshire. This initiative aims to revolutionise their service delivery, enhance customer support, and most importantly, tackle water leakage.
The implementation of smart metering technology will not only strengthen the security of Yorkshire Water’s water supply but also significantly reduce the reliance on chemicals in water treatment processes, leading to a decrease in carbon emissions associated with water treatment and distribution.
Moreover, the introduction of smart meters will revolutionise leakage detection, ensure accurate billing for customers, and offer valuable insights into water usage patterns throughout the region.
Adam Smith, Yorkshire Water’s Manager of Smart Networks and Metering Transformation, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, ‘The adoption of smart meters will allow us to gain a deeper understanding of water demand trends and target our water efficiency efforts more effectively. This technology will not only provide us with valuable data on customer water consumption but also enable us to offer the most suitable tariffs, resulting in more precise and frequent water billing.’
Smith shared a success story from the pilot phase of the smart meter programme, revealing that the identification of leakage on customers’ pipes had already saved an impressive 500,000 litres of water. The expansion of this project is poised to build on these achievements and elevate the overall customer experience to new heights.
The commencement of the meter replacement scheme is scheduled for 2025, pending the final determination from Ofwat, expected to be announced in December 2024.
