Wheatley Group gives free laptops to social housing tenants.

Social housing tenants across Scotland are now able to access quality laptops and tablets for free, thanks to an innovative new IT recycling scheme initiated by Wheatley Group. The ‘Techshare’ programme involves repurposing old staff devices and distributing them to tenants who may not have the means to purchase their own computer equipment.
These laptops, iPads, and tablets are proving to be invaluable tools for tenants, enabling them to go online for various purposes such as studying, applying for jobs and training, managing welfare benefits, and staying connected with friends and family.
Managed by the Wheatley Foundation, the programme has had a positive impact on Wheatley customers residing in communities across Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dumfries, Renfrewshire, and Fife.
Professor Paddy Gray OBE, chair of Wheatley Foundation, highlighted the dual benefits of the Techshare programme, stating, “As we observe Zero Waste Week, it is heartening to see initiatives like Techshare playing a role in both environmental conservation and improving the lives of tenants. By repurposing computer devices, Techshare prevents electronic waste from ending up in landfills and instead empowers individuals who would otherwise struggle to access such technology.”
Before distributing the devices, Wheatley ensures they undergo thorough quality checks. Devices that are deemed suitable for upcycling are then refurbished to function as good as new. This initiative comes at a time when the Scottish Government has announced a pause in funding for its free iPad scheme, originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to facilitate online access for more individuals.
One of the many beneficiaries of the Techshare programme is Omolara Lasisi, a tenant of Wheatley Homes Glasgow. Alongside her partner, Dara, and daughter, Oyinda, she has received two laptops through the scheme. Expressing her gratitude, Omolara shared, “We are truly thankful for being provided with two laptops, knowing how costly they can be. I am currently pursuing a healthcare course at Glasgow Clyde College, and having a laptop has significantly aided me in my studies.”
She added, “My daughter is also preparing to move to Aberdeen for her studies in International Business and Spanish at the university, so having access to a laptop will be essential for her academic pursuits.”
The Techshare programme stands as a commendable example of how repurposing technology can have a meaningful impact on individuals’ lives while contributing to environmental sustainability. Wheatley Group’s dedication to fostering digital inclusion and reducing electronic waste is truly commendable and sets a positive precedent for other organisations to follow suit.
