Survey: UK Needs More Home Charging for EV Uptake

According to a recent survey conducted by Trojan Energy, more than half of adults living in households without a driveway would consider purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) if they had access to home charging solutions. The survey, commissioned by the electric vehicle charging company and its partner WA Communications, highlights the strong preference for home charging options and the existing barriers hindering a smooth transition to EVs.

To gain a better insight into consumer preferences amidst the EV transition, Trojan Energy collaborated with Deltapoll to survey 1,000 drivers who do not currently own an EV and lack off-street parking facilities. The survey, carried out in late June 2024, aimed to gauge attitudes towards charging options and the broader market scenario.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • 54% of participants view the provision of home charging solutions as a national priority for the government during the EV transition, with this number rising to 58% among households with multiple cars.
  • 54% of adults in households without a driveway would be inclined to buy an electric vehicle if they had access to home charging solutions.
  • 62% plan to charge their future EV either at home or close to their residence on the street.
  • 50% of respondents with one or two cars believe that the lack of access to home charging solutions is a barrier preventing them from shifting to an EV.

The survey underlines the critical need to address the political and cultural barriers that hinder the widespread adoption of home charging solutions, especially for the approximately 7.8 million UK drivers who have to park on the street.

Stay tuned for more insights to be revealed soon, including consumer interest in government support for accessing on-street home charging solutions and the attitudes of Gen Z and Millennials towards EV adoption.

Mark Constable, Head of Public Affairs at Trojan Energy, commented on the survey results:

“Trojan is pleased yet unsurprised by the findings, given our experience in various communities. Home charging remains a top priority for individuals without off-street parking, and achieving a just transition to EVs depends on providing equal opportunities for all.”
