The Scottish Environment Protection Agency Seeks Input on Proposed Changes to Environmental Regulation in Scotland

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is reaching out to regulated businesses, trade associations, and other stakeholders to gather feedback on planned adjustments to how environmental activities are overseen in Scotland.

SEPA’s consultations will play a pivotal role in shaping the implementation of the Integrated Authorisation Framework for regulating waste management, water, and industrial activities. This framework, established under the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations 2018 (EASR 2018), is designed to streamline environmental regulation into a cohesive and user-friendly system that is easily understandable by both businesses and individuals.

Sandra Tough, the Head of Permitting at SEPA, emphasised the importance of stakeholder involvement, stating, “Our latest consultations on regulatory charging and standard conditions offer businesses a platform to voice their opinions and assist us in maintaining a fair and proportionate approach to environmental regulation.”

Tough further added, “We are keen to listen to the perspectives of the businesses and organisations under our regulation, industry representatives, and members of the public with an interest in environmental matters. Your feedback will be instrumental in shaping a robust and consistent regulatory framework to enhance environmental protection while empowering businesses to make well-informed decisions regarding regulated activities and enhancing the transparency of our regulatory processes.”
