Northern Gas Network staff to vote on strike

Concerns have been raised by Northern Gas Network (NGN) workers regarding their working conditions, sparking discussions about potential strike action.
Hundreds of NGN employees are gearing up to vote on whether to embark on a strike due to disputes over their terms and conditions of employment. The emergency gas workers are advocating for a reduction in their working week, improved sick pay, fair overtime rates, and an end to workplace bullying.
The workers feel that their requests have been overlooked by management, leading to growing frustration within the workforce.
An initial indicative ballot showed a landslide 99.5 per cent majority in favour of taking strike action, with an impressive 97 per cent turnout among the workforce.
Mark Horsley, the Chief Executive Officer of NGN, expressed his disappointment with the current situation, emphasizing the company’s recognition as an employer offering competitive pay and some of the best working conditions in the industry.
‘Last year, we implemented a substantial 9% pay raise along with a £1,000 cost-of-living bonus. In our recent discussions with the GMB, we presented an offer that aimed to enhance both terms and pay for our employees,’ Horsley stated.
‘Our primary focus remains on ensuring the continuous delivery of a safe and reliable gas supply to our valued customers. Rest assured, we have robust strategies in place to mitigate any potential disruptions caused by industrial actions.’
NGN estimates that the full implementation of the workers’ demands would amount to an annual cost of approximately £28 million for the company.
