Maidenhill to get over 100 new council homes

Exciting news for residents of Newton Mearns as East Renfrewshire Council is gearing up to hand over the keys to more than 100 new-build council houses in the area. These new homes, constructed by Cala Homes (West) as part of the Maidenhill development, will consist of a mix of one-bedroom flats, two-bedroom flats, three-bedroom houses, and four-bedroom houses.
This project represents a substantial investment of over £19 million, thanks to funding from Scottish Government grants, developer contributions, and the council’s capital investment. The addition of these homes follows the successful delivery of 96 affordable homes in Maidenhill by Taylor Wimpey and Robertson Homes in recent years.
What sets these new properties apart are their energy-efficient features, including solar panels to keep energy bills low and a water mist system that activates in case of excess heat. The first batch of eight homes has already been handed over to new tenants, with Douglas Watt among the lucky recipients of a one-bedroom flat. Mr. Watt expressed his delight at the quality and layout of his new home, emphasising how it has quickly become a place he sees himself living in for the long term.
Council leader Owen O’Donnell and director of environment Caitriona McAuley visited Mr. Watt to see firsthand how he was settling into his new surroundings. The feedback from residents like Mr. Watt has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the excellent service provided by the council’s housing team.
Councillor Danny Devlin, who oversees housing and environment matters, expressed his satisfaction at being able to offer such high-quality accommodation to people in need. He highlighted the ongoing demand for social housing in East Renfrewshire and the council’s commitment to addressing this need through developments like Maidenhill.
Cala Homes (West) land manager Gillian Hessett also shared her pride in delivering these new homes to the community. She emphasized the importance of not just creating quality homes but also fostering a vibrant and inclusive new community at Maidenhill.
With a state-of-the-art primary school at the heart of the Maidenhill development, residents can look forward to not just a new home but also a thriving community to be a part of. The combination of modern, energy-efficient homes and a strong sense of community spirit is sure to make Maidenhill a sought-after location for families and individuals looking to put down roots in East Renfrewshire.
