Greece’s Solar Energy Project Sparkles

Tuesday 3 September 2024

Exciting news has emerged from the sunny landscapes of Prosotsani Drama in north-eastern Greece, where a groundbreaking 100MW solar PV project developed by Cero Generation has successfully entered commercial operation.

This state-of-the-art solar project, named Delfini, is expected to produce a staggering 157 GWh of clean electricity each year – enough to power 58,140 homes in the region. Situated on challenging mountainous terrain, the project is equipped with a 2.5-kilometre 33kV medium voltage line that connects to a 33/150kV high voltage substation.

An extensive ten-kilometre network of overhead lines, featuring 29 towers, has been carefully integrated to link the Delfini project to the Electricity Transmission System effectively. In addition to its impressive energy output, the project will also play a crucial role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by preventing 65,300 tonnes of harmful gases from entering the atmosphere annually.

Expressing her delight at the project’s successful completion, Marta Martinez Queimadelos, the Chief Executive Officer of Cero Generation, stated: “We’re thrilled to witness the Delfini project commencing commercial operations, delivering cleaner, more affordable, and secure energy to the Drama region.

“I take immense pride in the vision, determination, and engineering excellence exhibited by the Cero team in bringing this intricate and ambitious project to fruition. This project stands as a significant milestone in Greece, showcasing that renewable energy initiatives can thrive without the necessity for government subsidies.

“We anticipate that this success story will underscore the commercial viability of numerous other solar PV projects across Greece, aligning with the country’s ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions by up to 40% by the year 2030.”

With Greece’s proactive stance towards sustainability and carbon reduction, projects like Delfini are spearheading the country’s transition towards a cleaner and greener future. By harnessing the power of solar energy, Greece is not only meeting its environmental obligations but also fostering a diverse and resilient energy landscape that benefits both the economy and the environment.
