Up to £1,700 debt grants now available from British Gas Energy Trust

The British Gas Energy Trust is stepping up to offer energy debt grants of up to £1,700 for customers struggling with debt on credit or pre-payment meter accounts, whether they are British Gas customers or not. This initiative comes at a critical time when changes to Winter Fuel Payments have left an estimated 10 million elderly people without this crucial state support.
The Trust’s Individuals and Families Fund has recently reopened, offering a lifeline to those in need. In contrast to the limited eligibility criteria for Winter Fuel Payments in England and Wales, the Trust aims to provide support to as many eligible households as possible across Britain. The grants range from £100 to £300 for those who qualify, helping alleviate the burden of energy costs as we move towards winter.
In the previous financial year, the Trust assisted over 5,300 households, distributing more than £7.8 million in energy debt grants. Notably, over £320,000 was allocated to households in Scotland, highlighting the Trust’s commitment to serving diverse communities.
Jessica Taplin, the Trust’s chief executive officer, emphasised the importance of reaching out to those in need of support. She acknowledged the challenging circumstances exacerbated by the energy price cap increase and changes in eligibility for government assistance, underscoring the Trust’s dedication to helping individuals and families navigate financial difficulties.
Moreover, the Trust extends its support beyond financial aid, funding nine projects in community-based charities and social enterprises across Scotland. These initiatives offer valuable advice on financial planning, benefits assessments, energy efficiency measures, and broader topics such as housing, employment, and mental health support.
