Approval granted for new homes at former McWhirter House site in Larkhall.

Approval has been granted for the construction of 19 new council homes at the site of the former McWhirter House and Nesbitt Day Centre in Larkhall. The decision was made by councillors at last week’s Planning Committee meeting, paving the way for the development of these much-needed homes in the area.

The 19 homes, which will be available for social rent, will include eight cottage flats and will be situated at the brownfield site on Raploch Street in Larkhall. This development is a significant step towards addressing the demand for affordable accommodation in the social rented sector.

Councillor Davie McLachlan, who chairs the council’s Housing and Technical Resources Committee, expressed his delight at the approval of the project. He highlighted the importance of building high-quality, affordable, and sustainable homes on vacant brownfield land, emphasizing the positive impact this will have on the community.

This development is spearheaded by South Lanarkshire Council in collaboration with the South Lanarkshire University Health and Social Care Partnership. It marks the beginning of a new ‘progressive housing approach’ aimed at increasing the number of homes that cater to specific housing needs in South Lanarkshire, while also being adaptable to changing requirements over time.

In addition to approving the construction of the homes, planning permission was also granted for the creation of a new access road from Watson Street, pedestrian access points from Raploch Street and Watson Street, landscaping, fencing, and the provision of 30 off-street parking spaces.

This initiative aligns with the council’s commitment to boosting the supply of affordable homes in South Lanarkshire and will be funded jointly by the council and the Scottish Government. It represents a significant investment in the community and a step towards creating a more inclusive and sustainable living environment for residents.
