North England tests battery-powered trains

Friday 30 August 2024
The much-anticipated trial of an intercity battery train is set to kick off between York to Manchester Airport and Leeds to Liverpool Lime Street. This innovative trial will span over the next eight weeks and aims to push the boundaries of battery technology on the national rail network.
During the trial period, various aspects of the battery’s performance will be tested rigorously. This includes its efficacy on hills, regenerative charging capabilities through braking, fuel and emission savings, as well as its zero-emission battery mode compatibility in train stations.
One of the standout features of this revolutionary battery is its ability to generate a peak power exceeding 700kw. Experts predict that this advancement could potentially slash emissions and fuel costs by up to 30% on a Hitachi intercity train.
This landmark project brings together industry giants such as TransPennine Express (TPE), Angel Trains, and Hitachi Rail. Notably, this marks the first trial in the UK where a diesel engine is being swapped out for a cutting-edge battery on an intercity train.
Prior to the official trial launch, the battery train already achieved a significant milestone by acing low-speed tests. These tests showcased the train’s capability to function solely on battery power, resulting in zero tailpipe emissions – a remarkable feat for sustainable transportation.
Expressing his enthusiasm for this groundbreaking initiative, Paul Staples, the Engineering, Safety, and Sustainability Director at TPE, remarked, ‘This trial signifies a monumental leap for the rail industry not only in the UK but globally towards reducing carbon emissions. TransPennine Express remains steadfast in its commitment to making our journeys more environmentally friendly, reducing our carbon footprint, fortifying our resilience to climate change, and enhancing local air quality.’
